What the Research Shows
How to read nutritional research responsibly
Research involving tocotrienols and geranylgeraniol is growing. Some findings are encouraging, while others remain uncertain or inconsistent.
To understand what the science actually means, it helps to recognize the different types of evidence.
Laboratory studies
Laboratory studies examine compounds in isolated cells, tissues or biochemical systems.
Researchers use these experiments to:
Discover possible mechanisms
Examine antioxidant activity
Study cellular signaling
Identify promising areas for further research
Laboratory studies are useful starting points, but they cannot reproduce the complexity of the human body.
A concentration applied directly to isolated cells may not be achievable or appropriate through oral supplementation.
Animal studies
Animal studies allow researchers to investigate absorption, metabolism and whole-body responses under controlled conditions.
Tocotrienols and geranylgeraniol have been studied in animal models involving muscle, bone, metabolic and cellular processes.
These findings can help researchers design human trials, but biological differences mean an animal result cannot be presented as a proven human benefit.
Human absorption studies
Pharmacokinetic studies examine how a compound enters the bloodstream, how its concentration changes over time and how the body processes it.
Human research has detected increased blood concentrations of tocotrienols after oral supplementation with annatto-derived preparations. Some studies have also found that food and formulation can influence absorption.
These studies demonstrate exposure to the compound. They do not, by themselves, prove a particular health outcome.
Human safety research
A 12-week trial evaluated annatto-derived tocotrienol in postmenopausal women. The researchers reported that the studied amounts appeared well tolerated based on the liver, kidney and other safety measurements they examined.
The result applies to that study’s participants, product, duration and amounts. It should not be generalized to every person or formulation.
Human research on supplemental geranylgeraniol is more limited. Preliminary safety investigations exist, but larger and longer independent trials are needed.
Human outcome studies
Clinical trials have examined tocotrienols in relation to selected measurements involving:
Antioxidant status
Lipid metabolism
Bone turnover
Metabolic health
Inflammatory markers
Results have been mixed.
For example, one annatto-tocotrienol study reported favorable changes in selected bone-turnover markers. However, a meta-analysis examining tocotrienol supplementation and blood lipids did not find significant overall reductions in LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol or triglycerides.
This is why a single study should never be used to promise a guaranteed result.
What has not been established?
Current evidence does not establish that tocotrienol or geranylgeraniol supplements can:
Cure cancer
Prevent dementia
Reverse osteoporosis
Treat muscle loss
Replace cholesterol medication
Prevent cardiovascular disease
Eliminate medication side effects
Guarantee a longer life
Research involving a disease does not automatically mean that a supplement can prevent or treat that disease.
Safety and responsible use
Always follow the serving directions on the product label.
Consult a qualified healthcare professional before supplementation if you:
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Have a diagnosed medical condition
Take prescription medication
Use anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication
Are preparing for surgery
Vitamin E supplements may interact with medications affecting blood clotting, especially when used at higher amounts.
Our approach
Our products provide annatto-derived delta- and gamma-tocotrienol or geranylgeraniol as clearly identified ingredients. We present them as areas of developing nutritional science rather than proven treatments.
